Newmarket’s trees will get a little lighter as pruning work begins along the streets this month.

The municipal forestry department, along with contractors, will conduct block pruning work from now until early spring. The work is meant to ensure the pathways are clear for pedestrians and winter snow plowing operations.

“This important work will help protect Newmarket's tree canopy by keeping them healthy and safe by reducing the chance of branches being hit and causing injury and property damage,” the municipality said in a news release.

Snow plow operators may be doing dry runs on sidewalks this fall to test for encroachments, obstructions and trees that could impact operations. Forestry staff will prune trees that may obstruct.

The town has also started its annual boulevard tree maintenance program, where the town prunes 5,000 town-owned trees.

The town suggested residents can help prepare their property for winter by edging sod to avoid tearing when the sidewalk snowplow passes and ensuring all landscape features are positioned at least 45 centimetres or 18 inches away from both sides of the sidewalk.
