An 83-year-old man is the second resident to pass away with COVID-19 acquired in the outbreak at Newmarket Health Centre.

The man, who died Dec. 17 at the long-term care facility after symptom onset on Nov. 26, is the 28th COVID-19 related fatality in Newmarket.

A 76-year-old man was the first resident to pass away on Nov. 30 as a result of the 43-day outbreak that has continued to grow in severity, with 24 residents and 22 health-care workers confirmed with cases as of Dec. 19.

The first case, a health-care worker at the 107-resident facility on Eagle Street operated by the Regional Municipality of York, was confirmed on Nov. 7.

An additional staff member tested positive on Nov. 20, and the infections began snowballing with six residents testing positive on Nov. 24.

York Region Public Health is reporting the COVID-19 related deaths of three more long-term care residents today, in King City, Markham and Vaughan, bringing the region's pandemic death toll to 333. Seventy-four per cent of the fatalities are linked to outbreaks in long-term, retirement and group homes, with 70 per of the cases aged 80 and older.

In Newmarket, 75 per cent of the 28 COVID-19 related deaths were as a result of outbreaks at institutional facilities, with 61 per cent of the cases aged 80 and older.

The most virulent of Newmarket's 13 institutional outbreaks to date was an outbreak that lasted 47 days, infecting 80 residents — 15 of whom died — and 24 health-care workers at Mackenzie Place Long-term Care Centre operated by Revera.

To date, there has been 213 institutional outbreak cases, and 21 related deaths of Newmarket residents and patients.
