71-year-old man is Newmarket's 27th COVID-19 death

A 71-year-old man is Newmarket's 27th COVID-19 related fatality.

The man passed away Saturday, Dec. 5 at Southlake Regional Health Centre with a close contact acquired case of COVID-19, according to York Region Public Health on Dec. 8.

Symptom onset was Oct. 27, with the positive case confirmed Oct. 29.

This is the third Newmarket COVID-19 related fatality in the last week, two as a result of long-term care outbreaks, as Newmarket's case count has spiralled during the same time period. In the last seven days, 92 cases have been confirmed.

A 95-year-old man passed away Nov. 30 after acquiring COVID-19 at an outbreak at the Roxborough Retirement Residence.

A 76-year-old man also passed away Nov. 30, the first fatality linked to the COVID-19 outbreak at Newmarket Health Centre.

Of the 27 Newmarket deaths, three residents have died with a close contact acquired case, three with cases acquired by local transmission, one with a case acquired in a workplace outbreak, and the remainder with cases acquired in institutional outbreaks.

York Region reported four more COVID-19 related deaths today, totalling 324.
