A 95-year-old man, who passed away after acquiring COVID-19 at the Roxborough Retirement Residence, is Newmarket's 25th pandemic fatality.

He died Monday, Nov. 30 at Southlake Regional Health Centre after being confirmed positive on Nov. 26, the same day that symptoms appeared.

A COVID-19 outbreak was declared on Nov. 26 at the 149-resident Roxborough home when one resident case was confirmed. Two resident cases have now been confirmed at the Roxborough Drive facility operated by Verve Senior Living.

Nineteen of Newmarket's 25 COVID-19 fatalities are linked to institutional outbreaks. The majority of the deaths, 16, were in residents aged over 80, with six aged 65 to 79, and three aged 55 to 64. Seventy-six per cent were males.

Newmarket currently has two additional outbreaks at long-term care centres, Southlake Residential Care Village and Newmarket Health Centre.

The severity of the outbreak continues to increase at Newmarket Health Centre, which is owned and operated by the Regional Municipality of York, with 10 resident cases and nine health-care worker cases since a single case was confirmed Nov. 7.

The outbreak at the non-profit Southlake Residential Care Village is also worsening, with seven health-care workers now confirmed with COVID-19.

The 31-day outbreak was declared on Nov. 1, with two health-care workers of the 150-staff centre confirmed ill with the virus.

COVID-19 related fatalities total 309 in York Region, with 75 per cent linked to institutional outbreaks, and 70 per cent of the cases age 80 and over.
