Serious three-vehicle collision closed highway in Georgina for five hours Sunday night

A woman was airlifted to a trauma centre following a serious three-vehicle collision on Highway 48 in Georgina Sunday afternoon.

The collision occurred on Highway 48 between Old Homestead Road and Ellisview Road at about 4:15 p.m. Sept 1, Aurora OPP said.

The woman, a front seat passenger in one of the vehicles, was airlifted to a trauma centre by Ornge air ambulance services. Four other people were transported to hospital with minor injuries.

The involved parties include a 31-year-old female from Markham, a 42-year-old man from Mount Albert, a 52-year-old woman from Whitchurch-Stouffville, a 15-year-old male from Whitchurch-Stouffville, and a 64-year-old man from Whitchurch-Stouffville. Police were not able to identify which woman was airlifted to hospital.

The vehicles include two sedans in a head-on collision and an SUV that became tangled in it.

York Regional Police and Georgina Island Police attended the call along with OPP.

Southbound and northbound lanes of the highway were closed for the investigation and re-opened at 9 p.m.
