A Richmond Hill man has been charged with fraud, and police believe there might be more victims.

York Regional Police began an investigation Jan. 29 after two people reported receiving unsolicited emails stating they owed money to businesses.

“Through these emails, the suspect was able to gain access to their computers and make it appear as though they were accidentally credited $45,000 to their bank account,” police said in a news release. “The suspect would then tell the victims they need to pay back the money in cash to avoid being taxed. He would then attend the victims’ residences to pick up the cash payment.”

On Feb. 20, a suspect was arrested. A search warrant was executed at a Richmond Hill residence, where a “large quantity” of cash was recovered.

Xiao Su, 31, has been charged with two counts each of fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
