South Simcoe police confirm there was a death at Scanlon Creek Conservation Area Thursday, but they’re staying otherwise tight-lipped.
A large police presence was visible March 20 that closed for several hours an entrance to the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA)-run site.
On Friday afternoon, South Simcoe spokesperson Samah Othman provided a bit of clarity on why officers were called.
“South Simcoe police investigated a death that occurred on March 20, 2025, at Scanlon Creek,” she said in an email. “Out of respect for the wishes of the family, we will not be providing further details or information.”
Yesterday, Othman described the incident as an “active investigation.”
“Time is required to conduct due diligence,” she said at the time.
LSRCA spokesperson Sinem Connor confirmed Thursday afternoon the Yonge Street entrance to Scanlon Creek was blocked off, but had since reopened.
“We have just been advised that the police investigation around Scanlon Creek Conservation Area is now complete,” Connor said in an email.
Scanlon Creek is located in the rural, northeast section of Bradford West Gwillimbury.
It is described on the LSRCA website as a “hikers’ haven, a picnicking paradise, a birder’s delight and a photographer’s dream. Explore forests, marshlands, and glacial erratics, enjoy spring wildflowers, or the vibrant fall leaves and see plenty of birds and other wildlife as you hike the expansive trail system covering most of the 300-hectare park.
“Serving both environmental and recreational needs, the park is a nature preserve for flora and fauna and home to a Bark Park for our canine friends.”
