Are you a newly retired man who is finding the days are lonely and time is dragging? Are you a semi-retired man who has just moved to the community and wants to meet new friends? Are you a man who would like to be more engaged with the community, and learn new things?
The Men’s PROBUS Club of Newmarket can help you with all the above, and more.
The Men’s PROBUS Club of Newmarket is a global social club for the retired and semi-retired. It was established in June 1991, through the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Newmarket.
“The Club meets the third Wednesday of the month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 426, 707 Srigley St., Newmarket. After the meetings, many members chose to go out to local pubs for lunch to expand the social time,” explained Club member David Elms. “Spouses are welcome to come to the meetings as well,” he added.
Monthly meetings consist of a social time, a guest speaker, and time for questions and answers after the presentation. Often, one of the members will give a talk on his life and accomplishments as well. A special November ‘Christmas’ Gala dinner or luncheon is looked forward to each year, and spouses are enthusiastically welcomed to that event.
Coming up, the guest speaker for the April meeting is Peter Jennings. “Peter has been working with computers for 60 years and is best known for creating the first commercial computer game, Microchess,” said Elms. He added, “The last company of many he founded, CamDo Solutions, applies artificial intelligence to construction safety, agriculture and monitoring applications using solar powered cameras. This should be a fascinating talk! Peter also is the webmaster for PROBUS Global.”
Jennings will be speaking on Thinking Machines: Artificial Intelligence, a topic very much in the public eye.
“Our speaker for May is Luigi Calabrese,” said Elms. “He is a sought-after speaker on the world of tech, and demystifying it. His topic is Tech Uncomplicated: Tech Trends, Innovations and dirty little Secrets.”
Elms enthused, “We have had so many wonderful guest speakers, and learned a lot from them.”
PROBUS is strictly a social club, there is no obligation to fundraise or run events. It’s a club for gathering and having fun together. There is an initiation fee for new members, and a nominal annual membership fee.
“Prospective new members are invited to come to a meeting free of charge, to see if they are interested,” said Elms. “We are currently inviting men to come out and see what we are all about. We would love to grow our membership even more.”
Men interested in becoming members can learn more about PROBUS and fill out a membership form through the website, here.
