The community joined York Regional Police in honouring the legacy of fallen officer Det. Const. Rob Plunkett at its annual run in support of Special Olympics Wednesday night in Newmarket.

Members of the force, families and Special Olympics athletes participated in five kilometre and 10 km runs and walks in the Race for Plunkett and Law Enforcement Torch Run June 14 in support of Special Olympics Ontario.

The 22-year York Regional Police veteran was killed on duty in the early morning hours of Aug. 2, 2007, and the force has held the run annual since then.

Plunkett had been chair of the Special Olympics Spring Games in York Region in 2000 and was a strong supporter of the Special Olympics cause.

The event also featured a torch lighting, music and police displays at Riverwalk Commons.
