2 Vaughan restaurants closed, Thornhill market, Markham eatery charged for food safety violations

Two restaurants in Vaughan were temporarily closed, while a supermarket in Thornhill and an eatery in Markham were charged with food safety violations by York Region Public Health inspectors last week.

Max’s of Manila at 1520 Steeles Avenue W. in Vaughan was ordered to close on Sept. 9 for failing to provide adequate protection against the entrance of insects, vermin or rodents, according to the public health inspection report.

A report of non-compliance items notes failure to maintain equipment in good repair, failure to provide adequate protection against the harbouring of pests, failure to remove garbage/liquid waste when necessary to maintain sanitary condition, failure to ensure walls are kept clean/in good repair, failure to ensure floors are kept clean and in good repair and operating food premises maintained in a manner permitting health hazard.

Food handler education was conducted on-site, a verbal order was issued and a closure order was issued. 

Health inspectors conducted a re-inspection on Sept 10. The restaurant failed to maintain equipment in good repair, failed to ensure walls are kept clean and in good repair, and failed to ensure floors are kept clean and in good repair.

Frangoz Fish and Chicken at 9781 Jane St. in Vaughan was ordered to close on Sept. 14 for having an inadequate supply of potable water available for the operation of the premises.

Going Nutty at 2900 Steeles Avenue E. in Thornhill was charged on Sept. 14 with failing to ensure the presence of a food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation. 

Health inspectors educated food handler on site, a proof of public health sign was posted and a ticket was served.

Penta Q Cafe at 8333 Kennedy Rd. in Markham was charged on Sept. 10 with failure to ensure the presence of a food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation.
