During the busy month of March, York Regional Police is launching a series of public safety initiatives to raise awareness about responsible driving and pedestrian safety.
The month that is filled with festive celebrations, family vacations, and increased travel, also has added risks for road safety, a YRP news release said. The force is urging all road users – motorists, pedestrians and cyclists – to be alert and aware of what’s going on around you and follow the rules of the road.
March Break brings more traffic to the region. Drivers should remain vigilant and keep their speed in check, and avoid distractions like mobile phones. The higher volume of traffic brings with it a higher risk of accidents – reduce your speed, maintain safe following distances and be patient.
With increased foot traffic, pedestrians are more visible and more vulnerable. Drivers are urged to be extra cautious near crosswalks and busy areas. Pedestrians should use designated crosswalks and stay alert when crossing the street.
While you’re driving throughout the region or beyond, always wear your seatbelt, ensure that all passengers are wearing theirs, and that children are properly secured in appropriate car seats based on their age and size.
If you are planning a long road trip, make sure your vehicle is in good condition. Check tire pressure, oil levels and ensure your brakes are functioning property before hitting the road.
Alcohol consumption is common during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. YRP reminds everyone that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal and dangerous. Officers will be out in force, in both uniform and plainclothes, conducting enforcement in and around neighbourhoods and drinking establishments. In the past, these proactive deployments have shown to be effective in reducing the overall crime rate.
"March is a busy month, and we want everyone to enjoy themselves while ensuring they are taking the necessary precautions to avoid accidents and prevent injuries," police said. "Remember, whether you're travelling for a vacation or out for a night of fun, traffic safety is everyone's responsibility.
"We want all drivers, passengers, and pedestrians to arrive safely at their destinations."
