VIDEO: Man wanted for carjacking at Newmarket gas station

The stolen vehicle was involved in a fail-to-remain collision in Caledon a few hours later on Saturday night, police say

A 39-year-old man of no fixed address is wanted for a carjacking at a Newmarket gas station on Saturday night.

A woman was pumping gas at the station at Mulock Drive and Harry Walker Parkway when a man approached and entered her vehicle Aug. 3 at 6:30 p.m., York Regional Police said a news release.

As the suspect attempted to drive away, "a Good Samaritan" pulled in front of the vehicle to block it, police said. However, the suspect was able to flee by reversing, nearly ripping off the door of the vehicle. No one was injured, police added.

The same day, at about 9 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to a fail-to-remain collision incident at the intersection of Mayfield Road and Bramalea Road in Caledon. One of the vehicles involved was the vehicle carjacked in Newmarket earlier that day.

The suspect fled on foot, and despite the use of a drone and canine unit, police were unable to locate the man. A warrant for his arrest has been issued.

Giani Zail Singh Sidhu is described as five feet eight inches tall, weighing about 150 pounds, thin build, black beard, last seen wearing a powder-blue short-sleeved polo shirt, black athletic pants, navy blue prisoner-issued slip-on shoes, white or tan bucket hat.

Police have charged Sidhu with robbery, dangerous operation of a conveyance, two counts of failure to stop after an accident, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and failure to comply with an undertaking.

Police said the suspect had been released from police custody following a bail hearing on unrelated charges in Newmarket's District 1 before the carjacking.

Investigators are appealing for any witnesses to come forward. Officers would like to speak with anyone who may have video surveillance or dashcam footage in the area at the time of the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6630, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or leave an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com.
