Quebec man charged after police thwart vehicle theft in Stouffville

Raheem Mateenjam has been charged in relation to an attempted vehicle theft in Stouffville.

One person was arrested and another is being sought after police foiled an attempted vehicle theft last week in Stouffville.

On Dec. 19 at about 2:10 a.m., officers responded to the area of Ina Lane and Mostar Street after a man reported someone was attempting to steal his Lexus GX 460.

A suspect who fled on foot was located by police. He was in possession of a key fob programmer device, York Regional Police said in a news release. Another suspect took off in a grey Mercedes sedan.

The theft was unsuccessful, but the victim’s vehicle was damaged.

Raheem Mateenjam, 27, of Chateauguay, Que., has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of an automobile master key, possession of break-in instruments, and disguise with intent.

Anyone with video surveillance or dash cam footage on the roadways at that time is asked to come forward.
