Rubbernecking on Highway 404 results in 11 distracted driving tickets

Drivers holding smartphones to take pictures of a collision on Highway 404 northbound in Newmarket this afternoon were penalized

The Ontario Provincial Police issued 11 distracted driving tickets following a collision this afternoon on Highway 404 northbound just south of Mulock Drive in Newmarket.

"During this recovery, one OPP officer issued 11 distracted driving tickets to drivers trying to take pictures," reported OPP Highway Safety Division Sgt. Kerry Schmidt on Twitter. "Was it worth it? You can use these (photographs)."

There were no serious injuries in the collision at about 3 p.m. Thursday that saw a dump truck loaded with fill lose control and crash into ditch, followed by an SUV that also left the road after making contact with the truck, according to Schmidt.

"Incredible, eh? No serious injuries in this collision," said Schmidt on video about the severe damage to the truck.

The driver of the dump truck was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the driver of the SUV received minor injuries, according to Schmidt.

It's suspected mechanical failure caused the collision, he added.
