York Regional Police is deploying two command posts and additional patrols amid increased tensions in the Middle East and the anniversary of the attacks in Israel by Hamas that triggered the war in Gaza.

"York Regional Police recognizes that this is a period of significance for many of our residents and are committed to ensuring public safety and the well-being of all community members in our region," the force stated in a news release.

Foot and mobile patrols have been increased near faith-based institutions, schools and community centres. Additionally, diversity officers will be available at two command posts Oct. 4 to 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to support the community and address any concerns.

One command post will be stationed at the corner of Bathurst Street and Clark Avenue, near the Promenade Shopping Centre.

The second command post will be a mobile unit operating throughout Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham, at the following locations:

  • Longo's, 2810 Major Mackenzie Dr. (Oct. 4 and 8)
  • Hillcrest Mall, 9350 Yonge St. (Oct. 5)
  • Armadale Community Centre, 2401 Denison St. (Oct. 6)
  • Jaffari Community Centre, 9000 Bathurst St. (Oct. 7)

After this time, the need for additional support will be evaluated.

All reports of hate crime or hate/bias incidents will be investigated thoroughly, police said. To report a crime or outline a concern, call the non-emergency line at 1-866-876-5423 or speak to an officer at a command post or at a local district station.
