York Regional Police have charged a man in connection with two sexual assaults in Markham — the second of which is alleged to have occurred after the suspect had already been charged and released.

In the first incident, police say they responded to the area of Markham Road and Highglen Avenue for a report of a sexual assault on Oct. 3 at around 3:30 p.m.

"The victim was walking in the area when the suspect, who was unknown to her, approached her and touched her for a sexual purpose," police said in a news release.

A suspect was located by investigators that evening, charged with sexual assault and held for bail before being released with conditions, according to a YRP news release.

In a second incident on Oct. 12 at around 3 p.m., police responded to the area of Denison Street and Cartmel Drive for the report of a sexual assault.

A man known to the victim gained access into her residence, police said. While the two were sitting on the couch, the woman was sexually assaulted before being interrupted and fled on foot.

Officers located and arrested a suspect.

Mahendran Thambirathiram, 62, of Markham is charged with two counts of sexual assault.

Police said they are releasing an image of the accused because they believe there may be more victims and are encouraging them to come forward.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Thambirathiram is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
