This loaded gun was seized during a traffic stop Monday in Markham.

A loaded gun was seized when police pulled over an alleged impaired driver Monday in Markham.

At about 10:50 p.m., officers were patrolling in the area of Highway 7 and Cornell Centre Boulevard when they pulled over a driver for speeding. The driver showed signs of impairment and open alcohol was seen in the vehicle, York Regional Police said in a news release.

Police said a gun was found during a search of the vehicle had been stolen during a residential break-in in 2020 in Kitchener.

Vildredo Edinson Martinez-Fontela, 41, has been charged with the following:

  • Impaired operation
  • Impaired operation (80-plus)
  • Possession of a loaded restricted firearm
  • Possession of a firearm without a licence
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
  • Possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
  • Possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order
  • Possession of property obtained by crime
  • Driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor
  • Speeding
  • Disobeying a lawful court order

The accused was on a lifetime weapon prohibition at the time of his arrest.
