Witnesses say the driver of the vehicle involved in a collision on Newmarket's Davis Drive fled the scene this afternoon.
Dave Wilson said he stopped his vehicle to help the driver who was crawling out of the driver's-side window of the crashed vehicle shortly before 1 p.m. in the eastbound lane of Davis Drive at Lorne Avenue.
The man, who was bleeding from a head injury, ran off behind the strip mall at Davis and Niagara Street when emergency personnel arrived, Wilson said.
Karen Distler, who was driving the vehicle in front, said she saw the vehicle flying through the air as she looked in her rear-view mirror.
It appears that the vehicle struck the centre median and then became airborne, landing upside down, she said.
A female passenger remained trapped in the overturned vehicle and was extracted by Central York Fire Services firefighters and taken by York Region Paramedics Services to the hospital.
A York Regional Police canine unit arrived to track the driver, who remains at large, York Regional Police said.
Eastbound lanes on Davis were closed and traffic was re-routed onto Lorne until 3:11 p.m.
The investigation is ongoing and police are requesting any witnesses to the accident, or who may have seen the vehicle beforehand, to contact 1-866-876-5423.
