Three men from Chile are facing multiple charges following a failed carjacking in King last month.
25-year-old Kevin Espinoza Rojas and 22-year-olds Martin Tapia Gonazlez and Carlos Carvajal Moya have been charged with robbery with a firearm, disguise with intent, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and unlawful use of credit card, York Regional Police said in a news release.
Carvajal Moya was also charged with possessing an electronic device for motor vehicle theft.
On Jan. 9 at 8:22 p.m., police responded to an attempted carjacking in the area of King Road and Highway 27 in King.
The victim was travelling on King Road when the vehicle was rear-ended by another vehicle. As the victim exited their vehicle, two suspects wearing face coverings and at least one armed with a firearm approached the vehicle, police said.
Police said the attempt to steal the victim’s vehicle was unsuccessful and the suspects fled with items belonging to the victim.
On Feb. 5, four search warrants were executed at two residences and two vehicles in Toronto, where two suspects were charged.
A day later, a third suspect was intercepted by the Department of Homeland Security in Houston, Texas, according to a York Regional Police news release.
The third suspect was returned to Toronto and arrested by the Canadian Border Services Agency, which transferred custody to York Regional Police.
