A bystander intervened to thwart an armed carjacking attempt in Vaughan Thursday night.

A women had been sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle when a man opened the driver side door, told her he had a gun and demanded that she exit the vehicle at Major Mackenzie Drive and Weston Road on Oct. 24 at approximately 7 p.m., a York Regional Police news release stated.

When a civilian witness intervened, the suspect got out of the vehicle, revealed a firearm but then fled on foot, police said.

There were no reported injuries.

The suspect is described as male, Black, age 18 to 19 years, five feet six inches in height, with a medium build and wearing a grey, hooded sweater, black track pants and blue surgical mask.
