Two men have been charged in the murder of 22-year-old Nicole Mercer in Newmarket in July.
Shortly after her death, York Regional Police issued an arrest warrant for Alexander Jolly, 23, of Newmarket. On Friday, Sept. 9, he was arrested in Toronto and has been charged with second degree murder, possession of a firearm, and possession of a prohibited weapon, police said.
A second suspect was also identified through the investigation. Maitland Doran, 18, also of Newmarket, was arrested Aug. 11 and charged with accessory after the fact of the murder, possession of a firearm, and possession of a prohibited weapon.
Both suspects remain in police custody.
Mercer was found with life-threatening injuries outside a residence on Prospect Street, just south of Gorham Street, at 1:30 a.m. July 29. She was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead. The cause of death was a gunshot wound.
