Newmarket girl sings her way to CNE grand champion prize

Jessica Tang outshone 48 competitors winning $2,000 at the Canadian National Exhibition’s 37th annual Rising Star Talent competition

A Newmarket girl has won a prestigious prize at the Canadian National Exhibition’s 37th annual Rising Star Talent competition.

Eight-year-old Jessica Tang was named the grand champion of the junior category Aug. 31 after singing her heart out to Let it Go, made popular by the movie Frozen. She was awarded $2,000.

“I can’t believe it because the kids there are all talented,” said Tinky Tang, her mother. “It was an amazing night and all the kids did so well. I can’t believe she won grand champion.”

Throughout the 18-day fair, from Aug. 16 to Sept. 2, more than 100 contestants showed off their talents to vie for the title of grand champion in their respective age categories.

“It was tough this year because all the kids are so talented,” said Tinky. “Every round, it must have been hard for the judges to make a decision.”

Tang wowed the judges and the audience with her remarkable vocal talent, outshining 48 fellow competitors.

“Jessica picked the song because it has a powerful message,” said Joshua Tang, her father. “She also wants to inspire others.”

Tang is currently studying at Harriet Chung Performing Arts. Staff at the studio, located in Whitchurch-Stouffville, teach students how to become triple threats, in singing, dancing, and acting. Tang is enroled in the musical theatre program where she is taught how to use the three skills to tell a story.

“Singing moves her, and she wants to use her voice to make the world happier,” said Joshua.

The competition highlights and promotes local, undiscovered talent for more than three decades. Contestants are judged on natural ability, audience appeal, stage presence, and overall performance quality. The competition has had a cast of established past participants including jazz musician Matt Dusk and renowned choreographer and dancer Blake McGrath.

Tang previously participated in the competition in 2023 and has performed at the Newmarket Voice Festival, Aurora Performing Arts Festival, Yips Musical Festival, and won first prize with honours at an international youth music competition.
