If your child has ever wanted to try the fastest game on ice, head on down to the Magna Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The Newmarket and District Ringette Association is offering a free event for boys and girls aged four and up to test out their skills, and participate in fun games and activities.

Ringette is said to be one of the fastest team sports for girls on ice, although boys are welcome to try the sport at the local Come Try Ringette events.

Like hockey, ringette is played on ice with skates and sticks with six players per team on the ice at once. The objective is to score goals by shooting the object of play into the opposing team’s net at either end of the rink during stop-time periods of play.

“Ringette is the fastest game on ice and very unique as you have to pass the ring over each blue line, so it relies on working together as a team,” said Alyssia Byers, whose two daughters play ringette with the Newmarket Rays. “It is a great alternative or addition to hockey, and many players play both hockey and ringette.”

The association’s volunteers and coaches will show participants the basics, and if a child’s interest is sparked they can be signed up on the spot for the affordable Learn to Play program that runs weekly throughout fall and winter. The local association also offers an equipment lending program for first-year players.

All you need to bring is a pair of skates, helmet and gloves or mittens. A stick will be provided.

The Come Try Ringette event is Sunday, Sept. 8 from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. at the Magna Centre, 800 Mulock Dr. An information session will be held afterward.

You are asked to arrive at 1:45 p.m. to register, as drop-ins are welcome.

If your child needs a helmet to participate in the event, use the above email to let the association know in advance.
