Gormley restaurant closed, Richmond Hill retirement home, King eatery, Markham bakery charged for food safety violations

A restaurant in Gormley was temporarily closed, while a retirement residence in Richmond Hill, an eatery in King and bakery in Markham were charged with food safety violations by York Region Public Health inspectors last week.

Famous Sam's Restaurant at 12275 Woodbine Ave. in Gormley was ordered to close on Sept. 17 for operating in a manner permitting a health hazard and failing to provide adequate protection against the entrance of insects, vermin, or rodents, according to a public health inspection report.

The report of non-compliance items notes failure to maintain equipment in good repair, failure to failure to ensure equipment surface cleaned as necessary, failure to provide adequate protection against the breeding of pests, failure to provide adequate protection against the harbouring of pests, failure to ensure walls are kept clean/in good repair and failure to ensure floors are kept clean and in good repair.

Food handler education was conducted on-site, proof of public health sign was posted and a closure order was issued. A re-inspection was conducted at a later date.

Health inspections, at a re-inspection on Sept. 19, were satisfied with the premise. The restaurant reopened.

Chartwell Oak Ridges Retirement Residence at 12925 Yonge St. in Richmond Hill was charged on Sept. 17 for handwashing stations not conveniently accessible by food handlers and failure to provide handwashing stations with adequate supplies.

The report notes failure to provide adequate protection against the harbouring of pests. 

Health inspectors educated food handlers on site. A proof of public health sign was posted, a temporary measure was put in place and a ticket was served. A re-inspection will be conducted at a later date.

Wild Wing at 1700 King Rd. was charged on Sept. 16 for storing ice in an unsanitary manner.

The report notes failure to store and handle ice in a sanitary manner and failure to ensure equipment surface is cleaned as necessary.

Food handler education was conducted on site, proof of public health signs posted and a re-inspection will be conducted.

At a re-inspection on Sept. 16., public health inspections were satisfied with the premise.  

Baker Duck at 1661 Denison St. in Markham was charged with handwashing stations not conveniently accessible by food handlers.

The report notes failure to ensure equipment surface is cleaned as necessary, failure to ensure room is kept free from materials/equipment not regularly used and failure to ensure walls are kept clean and in good repair.

Public health inspectors educated a food handler. A ticket was served.
