NEWS RELEASE
TOWN OF NEWMARKET
******************************
The Town of Newmarket recognizes June is a month to celebrate individuality and to encourage movement. The Town has a number of activities and in-person events to honour our unique Indigenous histories, foster water safety, recognize the talent of our senior artists and help build a community that is inclusive and accessible.

“During the month of June, we come together to celebrate our shared individuality and movement,” says Newmarket Mayor John Taylor. “It’s wonderful that we can come together in person once again to acknowledge these important moments and to help welcome people of all ages, races and backgrounds to feel like Newmarket is a community where you belong. I hope everyone takes the opportunity to celebrate with us, or on their own this June.”

Join in and celebrate many of the wonderful monthly recognitions that June offers:

National AccessAbility Awareness Week (May 29 to June 4)

  • When: Saturday, June 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • What: Develop your awareness of the importance of AccessAbility with hands-on challenges and experiences, including sensory artwork, Parasport activities, a challenge course and magic show (10 a.m.). All abilities welcome!

National Indigenous History Month
June is a special time to honour the unique histories, cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Metis people.

Get Involved!

  • The Elman W. Campbell Museum (134 Main St. South) welcomes families to discover these unique histories throughout the month, with pop-up celebrations every Saturday in June. Each week the Museum will present a different theme, touching on the earliest inhabitants of Newmarket, the importance of bead work, our connection to animals and more.

Water Safety Week (June 4 to 11)
An annual campaign to educate Canadians on how to stay safe around water and how to prevent drowning incidents. At the Town of Newmarket, we have a well-established aquatics program to teach and train our community members in safe swimming.

With summer around the corner, the Town is offering a free program throughout the month of June to support new Canadians and Newmarket residents with water safety skills.

Get Involved!

  • Every Monday in June during public swim at Ray Twinney Recreation Complex (100 Eagle St. West), the Town is offering its Family Swim to Survive program free of charge and in five different languages (Farsi, Spanish, French, Mandarin, and English).
  • Residents can register for the program in advance using a PLAY account, or drop in (space permitting). The 40-minute classes runs Mondays (June 6, 13, 20, 27) from 6:30 to 7:10 p.m. and 7:20 to 8 p.m.
  • To register in advance, go to play.newmarket.ca and find the “Family Swim to Survive” program you wish to attend!

This year, the Town was a proud recipient of the Lifesaving Society’s Burlington Cup which is awarded to the municipal affiliate with the largest lifesaving program in a community with a population between 50,000 to 100,000 in Ontario. Seniors’ Month
In Ontario, we take this month to recognize our amazing older adults and the contributions they have made in the community. The theme for 2022 is to Stay Active, Connected and Safe. The Newmarket Seniors’ Meeting Place (NSMP) offers opportunities for its members, or those interested in joining, to build community, pick up hobbies and to stay active alongside their peers.

Get Involved!

  • This year, the NSMP is celebrating Seniors’ Month with a special Seniors’ Art Show & Sale featuring the artistic talent of 20 NSMP members. The show features a variety of mediums from painted hangings to photography, sculpture to textiles. Check it out at Old Town Hall (460 Botsford St.) from now until June 9, Mondays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bike Month (May 30 to June 30)

Celebrate cycling this month by cycling along our trails or on one of our many bike lanes. We even have bike repair stations along various routes to ensure you can get to your destination safely. Cycling is a great way to explore your neighbourhood in a fun and environmentally friendly way. You can learn more about the Town’s cycling infrastructure at newmarket.ca/cycling.

Check out these educational safety videos on how to cycle safely in Town.

Recreation and Parks Month
Now more than ever, we recognize that access to park and recreation is a fundamental human need that helps foster personal health, strong communities, and social inclusion. Across Ontario, June is an opportunity to celebrate the vast parks and recreation services and the perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy the many trails, playgrounds and open spaces we have right here in Newmarket.

Parks and Recreation Ontario has created an activity guide for the whole family to discover this June. Check it out and play Activity Bingo to see what you can accomplish together.

These June acknowledgments are recognized by municipalities, community organizations and schools in order to promote the value of activity, engagement, understanding, inclusivity, safety and knowledge.  To view all the ways to get involved in the June celebrations, visit newmarket.ca/juneis.
