East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson.

East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson is taking a short-term medical leave for up to three months, effective today.

Mayor Hackson shares this statement with the community: “After very careful consideration, in consultation with my family and on the advice of my physician, I have made the decision to take some time away from my position of mayor. This is one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make because I love supporting the community and working with this great team. I trust that East Gwillimbury is in good hands, and I know that council and staff will work together to ensure a smooth transition and that the business of the municipality will proceed without interruption. I would like to thank the community, council, and staff for their support.”

Under the 2022 to 2026 rotational acting mayor schedule, Ward 3 Councillor Scott Crone is the current acting mayor and will serve as council’s representative at regional council.

At a special council meeting on Thursday, Nov. 2, council passed the resolution required under the Municipal Act granting the mayor the temporary leave.

The resolution is required for any council member who will be absent from council meetings for three successive months.
