A dryer in the basement caused the fire that damaged a Newmarket house Monday evening, according to Central York Fire Services.
CYFS responded to reports of a basement fire at a house on William Dunn Crescent Nov. 11 at 10 p.m., according to an incident report.
The first responding crew reported smoke visible on the first floor of house in the area of Mulock Drive and Bathurst Street.
Crews conducted a search on all levels of the home to ensure occupants were out and located the fire in the basement. All residents had left the home without injury, the report said.
Neighbours on both sides were evacuated as a precaution, the report said.
Repairs are required before occupants can return to the home and they have received temporary accommodations.
CYFS is providing safety tips regarding clothes dryers, which can be a source for fires in homes:
- Use aluminum or steel rigid duct-piping for dryer exhaust instead of the accordion style combustible tubing made of vinyl or foil type material.
- Ensure exterior dryer vent flaps are clear of ice and snow and do not freeze shut.
- Keep the area around the dryer clear of flammable materials.
- Do not leave a dryer unattended in case the automatic shut off switch fails.
