The Town of Newmarket is celebrating after a Globe and Mail ranking placed it among the Top 50 most liveable cities in Canada.

The Globe and Mail released its second annual ranking of Top 100 liveable cities in Canada last week. Newmarket was number 48 on the list out of 488 communities from coast to coast that have over 10,000 people. That put Newmarket within the top 10 communities in Ontario to make the list.

“We are grateful to once again be recognized as a top liveable community in Canada, which speaks to the high quality of life we are very fortunate to have here in Newmarket and is really not a surprise for those of us who live here. We know what a special place this community is,” Newmarket Mayor John Taylor said in a news release.

The ranking evaluated cities across several data categories, including economy, housing, health care, climate, demographics, safety, education, community, amenities and transportation. Newmarket moved up in the rankings from last year, going from 83rd to 48th.

Newmarket noted it has received several awards and accolades in recent years, including a top municipality for events by Festival and Events Ontario, earning accolades as a top place for work-life balance in Points2Homes study, recognition for best farmers’ market by Farmers’ Market Ontario, and getting named for having the best main street in Canada in a 2016 contest.

“A big thank you to our community because working together with our residents and our many community partners, we have been able to achieve extraordinary things, and that is what continues to put Newmarket on the map across Ontario and throughout Canada,” Taylor said.

The town is moving ahead with a community rebranding strategy this year. You can find more information at heynewmarket.ca/communitybranding.
