Beginning today, utility relocation work as part of the GO Transit expansion project will cause some temporary lane, sidewalk and parking space closures in downtown Newmarket to mid-November.

Preliminary work is expected to begin today in the area of Riverwalk Commons at Timothy Street and Doug Duncan Drive as part of the GO Train expansion utility relocation project for the Barrie GO line, according to a Metrolinx news release.

Starting on Oct. 7, Metrolinx will be taking the overhead utility lines and transferring them underground.

This phase of work will take approximately four to six weeks to complete and will generally occur on weekdays only, Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Any excavation sites will be covered and securely fenced off from the public, Metrolinx stated.

"The Town will be working with Metrolinx to help limit interruptions to the community," according to the release.

The summary of "disruptions":

  • Temporary lane closures on Timothy Street starting on Sept. 30. Signage and detour routes will be available. Connections to/from the Tom Taylor Trail and AOK playground and parking lot will remain open during construction works. There will be no lane closures on weekends. The Newmarket Farmers’ Market will continue as scheduled on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Riverwalk Commons.
  • Sidewalk closure from 534 Timothy St. to just past Doug Duncan Drive starting on Oct. 7.
  • 40 parking spaces along the east side of Doug Duncan Drive (south of Timothy Street) will be required for this work from Oct. 7 to mid-November.
  • Members of the public are encouraged to use municipal parking lots in the area. Please see this downtown parking map for alternative parking locations.

Please see the map of the affected area for more information.

"The town submitted requests to Metrolinx to schedule this work during shoulder seasons to reduce road and parking closures as much as possible and to minimize the impact on the area and community events that happen downtown," the transit agency said.
