You can expect to see more officers out and about in Newmarket as they educate people walking, running, rolling, cycling, and driving through town about safe practices this summer.

York Regional Police will conduct foot patrols from June 26 to Sept. 3 as part of Project Pedals and Pedestrians to promote safe cycling and walking behaviour through education and enforcement.

Officers will discuss safe street-crossing strategies with school-aged children while handing out information cards and bracelets. They will be around Fairy Lake, Riverwalk Commons, and the Tom Taylor Trail.

Officers will also observe drivers near high-traffic pedestrian intersections to ensure safe driving behaviour.

The program follows the One Metre campaign to educate and enforce drivers and cyclists on traffic laws to keep all road users safe.
