In its first meeting of 2024, the York Regional Police Services Board re-elected both its chair and vice-chair for year-long terms.

York Region chair and CEO Wayne Emmerson, who served his first year as chair of the police board in 2023, was the lone nomination for the position this year.

With his nomination being uncontested during the Jan. 24 meeting, Emmerson was re-elected as chair. He previously served as vice-chair of the board in 2022.

“Thank you for your support,” he said. “We have a lot of work to do in 2024 and I’m looking forward to it.”

Steve Pellegrini, mayor of King Township, was also re-elected as vice-hair of the board. He’s served on the board since June 2021 and his re-election was uncontested.

The York Regional Police Services board oversees the local police service and provides direction to YRP's chief through policy. It is made up of seven civilian members.

Board members include provincial appointees Mario Cortellucci, Walter J. Perchal, and Madeleine Bodenstein, as well as regional appointees Norma McCullough and Linda Jackson, who is deputy mayor and regional councillor of Vaughan.
