UPDATE: 5 victims, suspect dead in Vaughan shooting

A sixth victim is in serious condition; the male suspect was shot by an officer during the incident in a condominium at Jane and Rutherford Sunday night

Update, Monday, Dec. 19, 10:30 a.m.:

York Regional Police is working to confirm the identities of the victims of the Vaughan condo shooting and notify next of kin.

The six victims, five of whom were fatally shot, were found in different units in the building and the suspected gunman, who was shot dead by police, lived in the building, according to a Canadian Press report. 

Chief Jim MacSween is to provide an update on the investigation to the media today at 2 p.m. at police headquarters.

No further updates will be available until then.

UPDATE, Monday, Dec. 19, 8:30 a.m.:

The gunman who was shot dead by a York Regional Police officer last night in Vaughan was a 73-year-old man, according to the province’s Special Investigations Unit.

There was an interaction between an officer and the armed man in a Jane Street condominium building during the incident in which five victims were fatally shot and a sixth was seriously injured.

Paramedics were called and the man was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the SIU.

Officers found five people deceased in the building and a sixth person was taken to hospital. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow, the SIU added.

Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

Residents of the building who had been evacuated for the investigation were able to return to their homes early this morning, York Regional Police said.

UPDATE, Monday, Dec. 19, 1 a.m.:

Five victims are dead, a sixth victim is in hospital in serious condition, and the suspect is dead following a shooting at a condominium building in Vaughan Sunday night.

York Regional Police were called to the residential building at 9235 Jane St., north of Rutherford Road, for a report of an active male shooter who had shot several victims, police said.

The suspect was shot by police and pronounced deceased at the scene.

York Regional Police has notified the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

The building was searched by the emergency response unit to ensure there are no additional victims and that it’s safe, police said.

A police presence will be on the scene as the investigation continues, police added.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the victims and their families,” Chief Jim MacSween said at the scene, adding there is no further threat to public safety.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Updates will follow.

A man is dead and several others were shot during an incident at a condominium in Vaughan this evening.

The suspect is deceased as a result of an interaction with police in the area of Jane Street and Rutherford Road, where a heavy police presence is visible, York Regional Police reported at about 9:20 p.m Dec. 18.

The province's Special Investigations Unit will be notified as required for officer-involved injuries and deaths, police said.
