A justice of the peace reviewing a preliminary inquiry in the case of a Toronto woman accused of stabbing a Newmarket man this month has placed a publication ban on all submissions and evidence presented in the courtroom.

McKenzie Gill is facing a charge of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of Blake Bibby, 36, in the area of Millard Avenue and Main Street July 14.

Justice of the Peace Thomas Glassford put the ban in place following a request from Gill’s criminal defence lawyer, Sherif Foda, at an Ontario Court of Justice hearing in Newmarket today, July 31.

“The first comment I will make is, I will apply for a publication ban under section 517 for any evidence or submissions at the bail hearing so everyone is on notice that that should not be published. The only other comment I’ll make is that I'm seeking to have this matter adjudicated in court and I appreciate (the Crown Attorney's Office) assistance.”

The case of Gill was previously remanded as Foda requested a disclosure of notes and evidence relevant to the charge from the Crown.

York Regional Police were called to a multi-unit building on Millard at about 10:30 p.m. July 14 for a report of an injured person. Bibby was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
