UPDATE, 3:10 p.m.: A device discovered by workers in a Newmarket house has been confirmed legitimate by explosion experts with York Regional Police.

It is currently being transported to Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden for destruction, according to police.

Bexhill Road and Old Main Street North have been reopened.

David Baker, a neighbouring resident, expressed both shock and relief upon hearing why police had blockaded the area.

"It is obviously something you would find very concerning. That house had been abandoned and sitting empty for at least six months or maybe even more longer and we were sad to see it being demolished because we really like the hillside," he said.

"It was a real surprise and it is something unusual to have an explosive device in your neighbourhood. I'm just glad it's over."
