In the wake of several "violent and traumatic" daytime jewelry store robberies, York Regional Police and the Regional Municipality of York are providing support through booths at malls in Markham and Richmond Hill.

Police are activating a traumatic incident response protocol (TIRP) as a result of community feedback following the robberies at  CF Markville Shopping Centre and Hillcrest Mall, according to a news release.

Members of the York Regional Police community services bureau will be in attendance to provide mall patrons "with healing activities, as well as crime prevention and personal safety tips," police said.

Resource materials and engagement pieces will be provided, as well as safety materials and wallet cards.

"TIRP representatives will engage with shoppers to gauge their feelings about safety within the mall, in order to best address community concerns," police added.

Members of the community are invited to attend:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 17, from noon to 7 p.m., at Hillcrest Mall, 9350 Yonge St., Richmond Hill.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 3 to 7 p.m., and Thursday, Dec. 19, from noon to 4 p.m., at CF Markville Shopping Centre, 5000 Highway 7 E., Markham.

"Under the TIRP, regional services including York Regional Police will provide co-ordinated support to communities impacted by violent and traumatic incidents that occur in York Region. The initiative intends to help residents feel secure and supported following traumatic events in local neighbourhoods, while enhancing community safety and the well-being of both residents and visitors," police said.
