York Regional Police is investigating a fire at a Newmarket business late Saturday night as a potential arson.

Police confirmed foul play is suspected at the blaze that damaged Upper Canada Collision Centre late Feb. 8 amidst snowy conditions. It was the second fire at the plaza in recent days, with the neighbouring Meineke Car Care Center damaged by a fire on Feb. 6.

Media relations Const. James Dickson said investigators are seeking witnesses who may have information or footage.

“The investigation is still in the early stages and we are appealing for witnesses or to anyone with dash cam footage that was in the area between 8:30 p.m., and 9 p.m.,” Dickson said.

Central York Fire Services deployed six fire trucks to the scene Saturday night, to the reports of smoke billowing from the area. The fire was severe enough to bring out 24 firefighters and an added command vehicle, with Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services providing an aerial truck on the scene and East Gwillimbury Fire and Emergency Services providing coverage.

“Upon arrival, the first fire crew found fire conditions coming from a commercial building. Multiple crews fought the fire using handlines and aerial trucks,” CYFS said in an incident report.

The fire came on the heels of another significant blaze Feb. 6 on the neighbouring unit, which substantially damaged the neighbouring building and also occurred late at night.
