Newmarket man charged in collision that caused Aurora power outage

A 38-year-old is charged with driving under the influence of drugs after a truck crashed into a hydro pole, causing a significant outage

A 38-year-old Newmarket man is charged with impaired operation following a collision with a hydro pole in Aurora Tuesday that caused some customers to be without power for several hours, as well as an extended road closure for repairs.

A red Dodge pick-up truck collided with a hydro pole, causing it to become dislodged, at Leslie Street and William Graham Drive yesterday morning, Const. Maniva Armstrong said.

The driver had to be removed from the vehicle by emergency responders and was transported to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, she said.

A man was arrested and charged with driving while impaired by drugs, she added.

Power lines were down as a result of the collision, which caused what Alectra said was a significant outage, affecting approximately 7,500 residents and businesses.

A spokesperson for the utility company said power was quickly restored for 7,125 customers by 11:41 a.m. but power was not restored for the remaining 351 customers until 6 p.m. when the pole was replaced.

Leslie remained closed between St. John's Sideroad and William Graham until today for repair work. Roads re-opened around 7 a.m. Jan. 11, according to YRP on Twitter. It said downed power lines were the cause of the extended closure.

Alectra crews were back on site this morning switching the system back to normal.
