A 40-year-old man has been charged by York Regional Police in Newmarket for multiple instances of fraud.
Jiaming Wang, 40 of no fixed address, was arrested Jan. 27 and charged with 29 cases of fraud-related crimes.
Police said that an "overwhelming" amount of identification and other fraudulent documentation was located.
The investigation began on Dec. 4, 2024, after victims contacted police regarding missing mail.
Police confirmed that banking and identification documents belonging to the victims went missing from their mailboxes.
Shortly after, bank accounts and credit cards were established in the victims’ names.
Wang was charged with the following:
- Fraud over $5,000 x7
- Obtain credit by false pretenses x6
- Identity theft x6
- Identity fraud x6
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
- Possession of proceeds obtained by crime under $5,000
- Posses identity documents
- Theft under $5,000
Police believe other fraud-related incidents have occurred and are appealing for those who may have had contact with the accused to come forward.
