Human remains found in Kawartha during search for missing Markham woman

The remains, which have yet to be identified, were discovered by a police search and rescue unit 100 km northeast of Markham

Human remains were found in Kirkfield in Kawartha Lakes during the search for a Markham woman missing under suspicious circumstances since last week.

The remains were found more than 100 kilometres northeast of Markham near Palestine Road and Fenel Road Monday, July 30 at about 5 p.m. as the York Regional Police search and rescue team continued the search for Ying Zhang, according to a news release.

Investigators are awaiting positive identification from the Office of the Chief Coroner, police said.

On Saturday, Changlin Yang, 26, of East Gwillimbury was charged with kidnapping, forcible confinement and aggravated assault in connection with Zhang's disappearance.

Investigators previously released images of the accused and a suspect vehicle, a white Ford van, seen in the area of Woodbine Avenue and Steelcase Road at the time of Zhang’s disappearance at 10:40 a.m. on Thursday, July 25.

A suspect was also seen with a large, green wheeled bin, police added.

Investigators are seeking additional witnesses in this area at the time or who may have seen the accused or vehicle in the area of Kirkfield in Kawartha Lakes.
