Firefighter injured at Newmarket house fire

Residents of the home on Wildwood were able to flee without injury yesterday afternoon, and have had to find temporary accommodations

A Central York Fire Services firefighter was injured at a fire that caused extensive damage to a house in Newmarket yesterday afternoon.

CYFS found heavy smoke and flames at the rear of a home on Wildwood Drive at about 3:38 p.m. It deployed six fire trucks and one command vehicle.

The firefighter sustained a lower limb muscle injury, was treated in hospital, and later released. The Office of the Fire Marshal was contacted because the firefighter was injured.

Two residents were home at the time of the fire and fled with no injuries.

Repairs are required before they can return home, but they have received temporary accommodations.

According to a CYFS incident report, the fire spread to the home’s interior as multiple crews worked to extinguish it.

Five York Regional Police cruisers closed the road, blocking traffic on Carlson Drive and Hazelwood Drive, while York Paramedic Services attended to assess injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
