Newmarket hockey star Quinton Byfield has signed the biggest deal of his career with a $31.25-million extension with the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings.

The five-year contract extension will last through the 2028-29 season, will see Byfield earn an average of $6.25 million per year. Byfield, who has played with the Los Angeles Kings his entire career, scored 20 goals and 35 assists last season.

Byfield was the second overall selection in the 2020 NHL draft. He grew up in Newmarket, playing for the York Simcoe Express and a brief stint with the Newmarket Hurricanes of the OJHL, before going on to the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves.

Over the course of his first years with the team, Byfield has had 28 goals and 88 points over his 179-game regular season NHL career thus far, after first debuting in 2021.

He has also appeared in 59 games as part of the Kings AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, collecting 41 points.

Byfield was a pending restricted free agent.
