A new York Regional Police unit has made 43 arrests and laid numerous charges after four months of targeting repeat offender dangerous drivers.
The Regional Enforcement of Priorities (REP) team took part in an initiative to catch high-risk prohibited drivers, criminal offenders with court-ordered driving restrictions, and individuals wanted on driving charges.
Between February and June 1, 2021, the team arrested 43 people and laid a number of criminal charges, according to police.
The REP team is part of the force’s Road Safety Bureau and launched last January to focus on criminal offences related to dangerous driving.
“Road safety continues to be among the top community concerns in York Region. Certain types of driving infractions have been identified as the Big 4 Dangers, which are the behaviours that put drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users most at risk,” YRP said in a statement. “These are impaired driving, either by alcohol and/or drugs, improper use or failure to use seatbelts, aggressive driving and distracted driving.”
The police force is asking community members to do their part in keeping roads safe by reporting dangerous drivers. If it's a life-threatening emergency situation, call 911 or for non-emergencies, fill out the online form to report unsafe driving incidents.
