York Region is increasing the prices to drop off garbage at its waste depots starting in 2025.
The region will be hiking the flat rate from $10 to $11 for chargeable and mixed materials 100 kilograms or less, which may see annual adjustments going forward. Loads with chargeable and mixed materials more than that weight will go from $0.17 per kilogram to $0.18 per kilogram, or $170 per tonne to $180 per tonne.
“The updated fee is necessary to offset the rising inflationary costs of operating waste depots and supporting the growing population while maintaining the quality of services offered,” York Region said in a news release.
The fee applies to the Georgina Waste Transfer Station, the Elgin Mills Community Environmental Centre in Richmond Hill and the McCleary Court Community Environmental Centre in Vaughan.
Chargeable materials include garbage, concrete, drywall, wood and yard waste. Recyclables can still be dropped off for free if not mixed with chargeable materials.
York Region said its cities and towns provide many circular programs to reduce waste, including curbside giveaway days and repair cafes.
