York Region is expanding eligibility for COVID-19 vaccine booster doses to all adults starting Monday, Jan. 10.

The local public health unit has offered booster doses at its clinics to those age 50-plus to meet the demand for the older population, despite the province's move to open eligibility to ages 18 and older weeks ago.

Now, you will be able to book for a booster anywhere in the region with 30,000 booster appointments to be released at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Medical officer of health Dr. Barry Pakes said new clinics providing increased vaccination capacity are allowing public health to make the change.

“To date, York Region Public Health’s COVID-19 booster strategy has emphasized providing added protection to those who were most at risk of severe illness and hospitalization, and together with our partners, we have successfully vaccinated over half of this 50-plus population,” Pakes said. “As we continue to increase our capacity through expanded hours and new mass vaccination sites, we are pleased to announce the expanded eligibility for booster doses.”

The province expanded booster dose eligibility to all adult Ontarians at least three months past their last dose on Dec. 20. York Region Public Health clinics did not immediately follow suit, though boosters were available for younger adults through the provincial booking system and pharmacies.

With the change, those age 18 to 49 can now book a booster dose through York’s system for its clinics, including the new clinic at Newmarket Community Centre.

The region also announced prioritized appointments for those in the education sector to support a return to in-person learning. That includes educators, bus drivers, child care centre staff, custodians, and administrators. Approximately 10,000 appointments will be available at clinics planned for Jan. 15 and 16.

“Reserving vaccines for educators and school staff to get their booster dose is one of the many ways York Region Public Health is supporting a return to in-person learning,” director of corporate communications Patrick Casey said.

Walk-in appointments for first and second vaccination doses are still available at clinics for those five and older. Booster doses are by appointment only.

The region said Moderna-brand vaccines will be provided to all individuals 30 and older, while adult Pfizer vaccines will be provided at select clinics for individuals aged 18 to 29.

You can book an appointment at a York Region clinic at york.ca/COVID19vaccine or by phone at 1-877-464-9675. Appointments are also available through local pharmacies or the provincial booking system.
