The Regional Municipality of York has named Lisa Gonsalves as its commissioner of community and health services effective Dec. 2.
The role reports to the CAO and provides strategic direction in areas including housing services, public health, paramedic services, seniors’ services and children’s services. Gonsalves steps into the role with 24 years in York Region, and having served in the acting position since June.
Gonsalves said she is honoured to step into the role after being officially appointed during the Nov. 28 council meeting.
“I’m committing to supporting council’s visions and goals,” she said. “I look forward to working closely with each of you to continue delivering the exceptional services that we deliver … Together, we can achieve great things and make meaningful differences in the lives of our residents.”
Gonsalves is stepping into the position recently held by Katherine Chislett, who retired in June of this year. Previously, Gonsalves was general manager of paramedic and senior services and has led various initiatives within the department, such as the creation of an inclusion charter for the region.
Newmarket Mayor John Taylor praised the appointment during the Nov. 28 council meeting, noting that he has worked with her in various roles in government over the past 18 years.
“Your dedication, your passion, your intellect, your acumen is without parallel,” Taylor said, “I just think we’re incredibly fortunate to have you in this role. Just excited to see all the amazing things that are going to happen under your leadership.”
Her work in the role is already earning praise from community groups. ANCHOR Canada executive director Shernett Martin praised Gonsalves in an update to York Region council Nov. 7 on African asylum seekers.
“We are very grateful she had led with heart and listened to our concerns,” Martin said.
Outgoing chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson said Gonsalves has had exceptional leadership over a 24-year career with the region.
“Regional council is confident her extensive experience and dedication will continue to drive excellence, helping us meet the needs of our growing and diverse communities,” Emmerson said in a news release.
