Walmart Canada is launching its annual ‘Fight Hunger, Spark Change’ campaign to raise funds in support of the Food Bank of York Region’s services for families, seniors, and people experiencing food insecurity.
This year’s campaign will run Feb. 16 to March 15, with Walmart customers invited to join the fight against food insecurity.
Food insecurity has been on the rise since 2022, due to the combination of rising food prices and housing costs and low income, the local food bank said in a news release.
The organization has seen a 25 per cent increase in the number of people who are accessing food aid programs in the region.
The food bank supports food programs in the nine municipalities of York Region, serving over 28,000 individuals in nearly 8,500 households.
“We are extremely grateful to Walmart and every shopper who donates to this campaign, making it possible for us to address rising food insecurity in our region,” said Alex Bilotta, CEO of the Food Bank of York Region.
“Thanks to the ‘Fight Hunger, Spark Change’ campaign, our food bank will be able to purchase and distribute nutritious food to 88 non-profit agencies, housing cooperatives and schools serving people struggling to put food on the table.”
Walmart customers in York Region are invited to support the campaign in four ways:
- purchasing participating food products
- rounding up their in-store purchases
- adding a donation to their online orders
- donating non-perishable goods in-store
