Newmarket-based environmental food packaging company Eco Guardian is opening a 40,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Aurora.
The award-winning company, which produces recyclable paper-based food containers, is set to produce up to two billion cups annually out of the “large-scale manufacturing facility," according to a news release from the company.
The new facility is set to open in the Addison Hall Business Park and will be fully operational in the fourth quarter of 2025, the release adds.
"With increasing global trade uncertainties, businesses across Canada are looking for reliable, locally sourced solutions," company president and CEO of Eco Guardian Anil Abrol said. "This new facility will ensure that Canadian businesses have direct access to high-quality, eco-friendly, made-in-Canada packaging without the risk of cost increases due to tariffs and supply chain disruptions associated with overseas imports."
Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas touted the news as a “significant milestone for Aurora,” adding the new facility will boost the local economy, create jobs “and reinforces our commitment to supporting Canadian businesses and innovation.”
“As a Canadian leader in sustainable food packaging, Eco Guardian has set the standard for environmental responsibility,” Mrakas said in a statement. “And their decision to expand operations here in Aurora demonstrates a strong commitment to supporting local economies while advancing greener solutions for businesses across Canada. It’s also a clear vote of confidence in our community’s potential and leadership in sustainable manufacturing."
The company produces 100 per cent compostable and recyclable paper products, with the new Aurora facility also set to produce other custom-designed food packaging solutions, like burger boxes and fry boxes.
"This is more than just a facility launch — it's a shift toward self-reliant, sustainable manufacturing in Canada," added Abrol. "We are excited to partner with businesses looking for high-quality, ethically produced packaging that aligns with Canada's commitment to a greener future."
Abrol started the company in 2004, as he set out to address the wastage produced by plastic bags. Abrol moved the company to a new larger office in Newmarket on Harry Walker Parkway in 2023. Newmarket Mayor John Taylor said he was "excited to see Eco Guardian expand" an encouraged residents to support the business.
"Eco Guardian is helping our community and our planet be more sustainable by reducing the use of plastic and contributing to a robust and resilient local economy in the process," he said in an email statement. "I’m proud that they have built their business in Newmarket and continue to have their headquarters here.
The new facility will be located at 275 Addison Hall Circle.
“This facility represents more than just economic growth – it symbolizes a shared vision of building a more sustainable, self-reliant future for Canada,” added Mrakas. “I am excited to see the lasting, positive impact this facility will bring to Aurora, the broader Canadian economy, and our shared efforts to build a greener tomorrow.”
