Coyote sightings spiked in 2024 in Aurora.

Amid a spike in coyote sightings, the Town of Aurora is hosting an information session on Oct. 30 to help ensure residents know how to handle encounters with the wild animals.

The number of reported sightings and encounters of coyotes jumped from 16 in 2023 to 189 sightings of coyotes and foxes in 2024.

The town launched a coyote and fox sightings map in April, on which residents can report sightings, where previously they were monitored by reports made by telephone. In 2020, there were 32 reports, 2021 saw 61, and 2022 saw 44.

During the information session, Coyote Watch Canada and Aurora’s Animal Services officers will be giving residents safety tips and information about coyote behaviour, seasonal and developmental milestones, and wildlife proofing properties.

The town advises residents:

  • Be wary of your surroundings when walking in forests, ravines, and open spaces;
  • Keep dogs on a close leash and bring a whistle or stick to scare away a coyote;
  • Never leave pets unattended outside, as coyotes can jump fences;
  • Remove all food sources, including ripe fruit and bird seed, secure garbage cans and compost, and fence off gardens;
  • Do not approach coyotes or their dens.

The session will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Aurora Town Hall council chambers at 100 John West Way.

The session is also being live-streamed through the Town of Aurora’s YouTube channel.
