A Newmarket business is offering community members a unique win-win opportunity to dispose of personal documents while supporting a good cause.

Andrea Bartley, an investment advisor at Investment Planning Counsel, has organized a community shredding event on Saturday, Oct. 2 for you to securely dispose of your documents while also making a donation to the Newmarket Food Pantry.

“Come and bring boxes of all of your stuff to shred, whether it be your old statements — or everybody’s been working from home, so if they have stuff they need to get rid of — as well as any little electronics like floppy disks,” she said.

They had rented a Shred-It truck for their business to get rid of their own documents and decided to open it up to their clients and members of the community.

“It cleans out our clutter,” Bartley said.

She said it’s really important for people to shred their personal documents like bank statements or anything else with private information on it instead of just putting them in the recycling bin.

“If people wanted to go through your garbage or recycling, there’s pertinent information on there that anybody with an unsavoury idea could take that and potentially get into your email or your bank account,” Bartley said. “So it’s really important to securely get rid of that stuff.”

She is also using the event to give back to the community by encouraging people to bring a non-perishable food item or monetary donation for the Newmarket Food Pantry.

“Being close to Thanksgiving, I know that the Newmarket Food Pantry does a turkey donation where if you donate a certain amount of money it provides a turkey dinner to those in need,” she said.  “We thought this was a perfect time that people could come in and help with them this year.”

The community shred event is taking place on Saturday, Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Investment Planning Counsel’s parking lot at 431 Timothy St., Newmarket.
