York Region public health temporarily closed two restaurants in Markham and Richmond Hill last week for public health violations.

Tim Hortons in Markham and Royaltea in Richmond Hill were ordered to close by inspectors.

The restaurant Cultures on Yonge Street in Newmarket also faced orders, though it was not formally charged with tickets or closed.

Public health officials temporarily closed Tim Hortons at 7001 Woodbine Ave. in Markham due to violations. Inspectors issued an HPPA closure order because the food premises were being maintained in a manner permitting adverse effects on food. The order requires the restaurants to address certain issues before they can be allowed to reopen.

Royaltea in Richmond Hill at 9350 Yonge St. faced several issues during a Dec. 4 inspection, including adversely affecting the sanitary operation of premises or “adversely affect the wholesomeness of the food.” Other problems included failing to provide a handwashing station with adequate supplies, using handwashing stations for reasons other than intended use and failing to provide water supply adequate to operation. That resulted in an HPPA closure order, but inspectors visited again on Dec. 5 and found the premises satisfactory with no further action required and re-opening permitted.

Food inspectors visited Cultures at 17600 Yonge St. in Newmarket three days in a row from Dec. 3 to 5, according to a report published Dec. 9. The first inspection found that the restaurant failed to ensure floors were in good repair, and failed to provide adequate protection against the harbouring of pests. The floors remained an issue on subsequent visits, but inspectors remedied them with education on-site. The restaurant was not formally ticketed.

York Region Public Health states the inspection report represents the condition of the restaurants at the date and time of the inspection only and does not guarantee or warrant the condition of the food premises at any other time.
